There are certainly some people for whom graphics are the most important part of a game, and if they're not up to the newest standards they don't like it - I have a friend like that, and maybe that's you. But the gameplay is constructed very well and it's interesting to plan your prison's construction and manage the populace and staff and scheduling. No one would claim that has good modern graphics - it's well-done pixel sprites, even more 2-dimensional than RPG Maker. I would have returned that game whether its graphics looked like Final Fantasy V or were on par with Star Citizen.Ĥ - Another game I quite like, and that is extremely well-received, is Prison Architect. Its graphics are much better than Final Fantasy V, more modern than Diablo 2, but still quite poor for what's considered to be the modern standard, and it also has very unoriginal and repetitive gameplay, so I got quickly bored. So even though it had better graphics, it was boring and I returned it.ģ - Then I tried Valheim. I tried Diablo 3, which has objectively much more modern graphics, but I found those graphics to be mismatched to the tone of the game (cartoony graphics on a grimdark story), and all of the character building strategy was completely gone. Its graphics certainly don't stand up to today's standard, in terms of you looking at the characters and saying "That looks clear and good" - but when taking in the whole screen, the artwork is very good, and the gameplay and character building is amazing. For most people, how much the graphics matter for that are on a sliding scale.ġ - I'll still go back and replay Final Fantasy V - there's no question that the graphics are on the primitive side even compared to the high quality SNES games, but the characters entertain me, the job system interests me, and the length of story is there.Ģ - One of my favorite games of all time is Diablo 2. When you talk about "getting into" a game, that means it interests you and you enjoy the act of gameplay. We're not part of the majority that makes a game succeed.Ĭlick to expand. So these are, to varying degrees, not the same thing for the majority of people. Know that it's not an audience of gamers that are speaking. So when people here tell you what we like or don't like about games. They don't have as refined of a taste as people here do.Īnd by the time their gaming taste becomes refined, they won't have time to play much games either, just like us. Most of us don't play games that often.Ī lot of people, or rather, kids, who do play a ton of games. But we're game developers, not game players. Both in life, and in our gaming experience.Īnd so naturally, our taste in games is more refined. "Why is no one playing my game?"Įdit: A lot of us here are mature. And not the game itself.īecause you can make a game with all of that.įun gameplay, good story, great graphics. That success is based on the game's marketing. Just as games with bad graphics have succeeded.Īnd so this is the only explanation I've come to. Because they also want to be part of the conversation. People will even play (or watch a let's play of) a bad game, if they think everyone else played it. And whether or not those people share and talk about it with others, after they are done playing. Whether or not you succeed at putting your game in front of those looking to play it. But if you play a game just for the graphics, hey, it's up to you.Ĭlick to expand. The success of a game, I believe, is purely based on its marketing. I can't speak for those hentai games, though, lol. A game doesn't need to look flashy with top-notch graphics. ![]() Or a music video with really sexy girls in skimpy outfits, but the song itself is disastrous. ![]() It's like seeing a beautiful, well-presented dish, but it tastes awful. You can have super amazing graphics but if the gameplay is bleh then I'll still hate it. But I hated it because its gameplay was very boring to me. I still enjoy some old games like Contra or Mega Man even though they are very old and look meh compared to what we have today. It doesn't mean I'll play your game if it looks like it was made with Paint, though. As long as they are decent enough and not too awful, they won't ruin my experience with the game. If a game has good gameplay, then I can overlook the somewhat average graphics and the story. ![]() Video games are kind of like music in some ways.
